Every February, the United States observes Black History Month. In this 100th year of the annual celebration, Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) is using the month to spotlight an employee, student, or alumni each week. Together, we celebrate their stories, contributions, and impact on our community.
Kayleah Cavallo is an alumna who graduated from PBA in 2014. Read about her background below.
Where are you from?
I’m from Miami, Florida.
When did you join PBA? What brought you to the University?
PBA was my dream school because it is a Christian university and it has some of the most robust programs of study. I joined PBA in the fall of 2009.
Why is Black History Month meaningful to you?
Black History Month is meaningful to me because it gives ode to the history, innovative accomplishments, and traditions of our rich culture. It highlights that we have found a way to influence so many areas and continue to be excellent in our contribution. We’re always known for creating our own lane.
How does your cultural background influence your area of specialization?
I come from a family of entrepreneurs who specialize in business and the arts. My dad was a businessman and entrepreneur. My mom was also in corporate business and continues to be an example to me of diversity in the workplace. I’ve always been encouraged by my parents and community to never stay in a box. Pursuing entrepreneurship runs through my veins because of their example and other historical figures. When I think of entrepreneurs like Madam C. J. Walker, who created beauty products for Black women and holds the Guinness record for the first female self-made millionaire in America and Janice Bryant Howroyd, the first Black woman to build and own a billion-dollar company, I am inspired by their example of trailblazing. They took risks but were faithful to their mission and created generational wealth. These and many other examples remind us that Black people are driven, compassionate, and tenacious, strong, smart, and unique.
What is one of your most meaningful memories at PBA?
Being a part of PBA praise and having some of the greatest women professors in the business school.
Anything else you’d like to share?
