Biography
Larry E. Shyers received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in counselor education. His dissertation titled “Comparison of Social Adjustment Between Home and Traditionally Schooled Students” won the Chi Sigma Iota ERIC/CAPS Outstanding Research Award in 1993. He also received a M.Ed. in counseling from the University of Central Florida and a M.A.T. in Social Science from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. He holds a B.A. in Bible from David Lipscomb College (now Lipscomb University) in Nashville, TN. He is a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), national certified counselor (NCC), and certified clinical trauma professional (CCTP). Dr. Shyers is a qualified supervisor for registered mental health counselors in the State of Florida. Dr. Shyers is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association (FMHCA), Chi Sigma Iota (the international honor society for counselor educators and professional counselors), Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), and the International Society for Trauma Stress Studies (ISTSS). Dr. Shyers has served as president of FMHCA; board member of FCA and ACA; CoChair of the AMHCA Legislature Committee; chairman of the Florida Board of Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Mental Health Counselors; legislative liaison for the Florida Board of CSW, MFT, and MHC; and chairman of one of the Florida Board of CSW, MFT, and MHC probable cause panels. Along with being a professor of counseling at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Dr. Shyers maintains a private counseling practice in Central Florida specializing in treating persons suffering from personality disorders and victims of trauma. Prior to his employment at PBA, Dr. Shyers was an adjunct counseling professor at the University of Central Florida, Rollins College, Stetson University, Nova Southeastern University, Liberty University, and Reformed Theological Seminary. He was previously employed for 6 years as the Director of Guidance at a private Christian school. His research interests pertain to treatment of trauma and personality disorders. His hobbies include prospecting for gold and gemstones.
