Biography

Dr. Janet Menzie-Suderam is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, who earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. She obtained her master’s degree in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, USA, and her doctorate of philosophy degree in integrative biology with a focus in neuroscience at Florida Atlantic University, USA.

Dr. Menzie-Suderam’s doctoral work focused on stroke research, and she studied the potential therapeutic effect of the growth factor, Granulocyte-colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF), in focal cerebral ischemia. She then transitioned in her postdoctoral research to investigate further the efficacy of G-CSF as a gene therapy intervention for global cerebral ischemia, a disease condition that not only directly impacts the brain but is one of the pathological outcomes of cardiopulmonary arrest. Through collaborative efforts, Dr. Menzie-Suderam initiated important novel research projects on mechanisms of protection against myocardial ischemia. She has presented her research at national and international conferences, including the Society of Neuroscience (SfN) and Neurological Disorder Summits (NDS). Her research has also been published in high-impact peer-review journals; a list of her publications can be found on PubMed:

Dr. Menzie- Suderam’s research in protective therapies for cerebrovascular ischemia propels her to extend her  research  interest  to  the  involvement  of  dysfunctional  cerebral- microvasculature in neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Menzie-Suderam is married to Pastor David Suderam, who pastors the First Alliance International Church (FAIC) in Fort Lauderdale. She is an active member of FAIC, where she also serves as the worship leader and director of the youth department.
