Biography
S. Mark Aliapoulios, baritone, made his concert debut at the age of 25 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Seiji Ozawa. Since then he has performed as soloist with numerous organizations around the world including the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony, the Shinsei Nippon Symphony (Japan), the Symphonic Orchestra of Belgrade Radio/Television (Yugoslavia), the Handel and Haydn Society, the Mark Morris Dance Company, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Boston Ballet Orchestra, the Longwood Symphony, as well as the Opera Company of Boston, the Boston Lyric Opera, Palm Beach Opera, the Miami Bach Society and the Florida Philharmonic Chorus. As a soloist, he has sung under the batons of leading international conductors Leonard Slatkin, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Mazur, Eric Leinsdorf, Lucas Foss, Sarah Caldwell, Jonathan McPhee, Jaime Laredo and Robert Shaw. In the traditional opera repertoire, he has sung leading roles in Madama Butterfly, Der Freishütz, La Bohème, Don Giovanni, Dialogues des Carmélites, Der Fledermaus, and Werther. Competition credits include: First Prize Opera Company of Boston Guild Auditions, Finalist New England Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions, Finalist Liederkranz Foundation Awards, Third Prize NATS Artists Awards.
An advocate of new music, Mr. Aliapoulios has premiered works composed expressly for him by Boston’s Daniel Pinkham and New York’s Kenneth Fuchs. He created the role of “Cadmos” in the 1995 world premiere of The Bacchae by Theodore Antoniou at the Athens Festival in Greece. He also sang the role of “The Father” in the world premiere of The Juniper Tree by Phillip Glass at the American Repertory Theatre, and created the role of “Creon” in the world premiere of Medea by Ray Luke (under the auspices of a Rockefeller Foundation grant). Recordings include the title role in the world premiere of Ethan Fromm by Douglas Allanbrook (Mapleshade Classic Label) and The American Vocal Arts Quintet (Titanic Label). Mr. Aliapoulios is in his twelfth season as the artistic director of the Choral Society of the Palm Beaches. He has taught on the faculties of Boston University, the University of Massachusetts, New England Conservatory, the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University and Palm Beach Atlantic University. He serves as director of music ministries at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach and as musical director for the music theater program at the New England Music Camp in Maine.
