Sarah Selden, a Littleton, Colorado, native will serve in Spain under the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program beginning in January 2021. She graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2019 as an English/secondary education major and won her Fulbright appointment in the spring of 2020.
A Fulbright is a highly-selective, prestigious award for international study that aims to foster understanding between U.S. citizens and those of other countries. During their terms, recipients live, work, learn and serve with people from their host country.
As part of her Fulbright Award, she will be teaching secondary school in Spain’s Galicia region, and she looks forward to that immersive cultural and linguistic experience.
“I believe that education is integral to building a better society,” she said. “By serving the global community by investing a year in education, I can contribute to creating a better, more intercultural world in the future.”
Selden was PBA’s Outstanding Graduate of the School of Arts & Sciences. She served as the president of PBA’s English Honor Society, which was named the outstanding chapter in the nation, and she won the Children’s Literature Association’s Carol Gay Award as the top undergraduate scholar in the nation. She also studied abroad at the University of Oxford and presented academic research at a number of high-profile conferences.
While at PBA, Selden was a writing coach in the Center for Writing Excellence and served as a volunteer writing tutor at a local high school with a large percentage of low-income students. After graduating, she taught 10th graders at Palm Beach Gardens High School.
