Ben KatzamanMajor: Management

Describe your current job role:

I am the founder & CEO of Wanderer Bracelets.

What professional experience(s) did you have prior to your current job role?

After graduating, I had the opportunity to work in retail and wholesale at Island Company, a local lifestyle brand based in West Palm Beach and had the opportunity to travel and learn a lot from the experience. I also worked at the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach and spent a summer learning from Palm Beach furniture designer, Walker Zabriskie in Bali.

What do you know now that you wish you had known about being a working professional?

Everything you do now compounds- every class, job or internship, trip you take, and opportunity that comes your way is an experience that will shape you in a significant way and help you learn more about yourself. Push yourself to get out of your comfort zone as often as you can.

"Push yourself to get out of your comfort zone as often as you can."

How did PBA prepare you for the world of work?

The Honors program at PBA gave me the chance to think deeply and push myself academically. Working closely with the career development office, I was able to get internships that were a good match for my interests and that helped me grow.

What advice would you give to current PBA students and/or young alumni who are about to start their first professional full-time job?

West Palm Beach is great, but go out on a limb and move to another city, preferably not your hometown. PBA is situated on such a beautiful campus and area that it’s very easy to get really comfortable- and at the same time miss out on a world of experiences to be had in other places. Spend your 20’s growing and exploring in other areas- you can always come back to Palm Beach or where you grew up!

Have you been mentored by anyone in your professional field since entering the workforce? If so, what impact has that had on you?

Yes, Walker Zabriskie, owner of Walker Zabriskie Furniture in Palm Beach, invited me to be his apprentice in Bali during the summer of 2014. I got to learn about doing business in Bali, learn about the culture, learn about sourcing unique product and handcraft furniture production, and overall learn about business and life principles.
