Describe your current job role:

I’m a supervisor of a community park where I oversee the daily operations of the park. I help manage and bring new programs to the community center as well as handle the staff and manage the yearly budget.

 

What professional experience(s) did you have prior to your current job role?

My past professional experiences prior to my current position were in the parks and recreation and fitness field. I worked at a gym where I handled the front desk and registered fitness memberships. After that I worked with the City of Dearborn in their recreation department. I was a fitness floor coordinator, where I managed a fitness area and a rock climbing wall. Next my wife and I decided to move back to Florida where I took a position as a program leader for Collier County Parks and Recreation. I helped create and manage community programs and events. I was just recently promoted to Park Supervisor in Immokalee, FL with Collier County Parks and Recreation.

 

What do you know now that you wish you had known about being a working professional?

I think networking is important no matter where you are in your professional journey. I recall a pastor saying “your net worth is your network.” That stuck with me, having people that will encourage you and build you up in your professional journey is a great support to have. Who you network with can help you achieve the plans God may have for you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, start and finish humbly.

 

How did PBA prepare you for the world of work?          

PBA has giving me the professional tools to be successful in my career, but more importantly has taught me how to be an example of Jesus in my life. While at PBA I had great professors and staff that knew me as an individual. My fellow students also encouraged me along the way. What I really love is that PBA gives you a great education supplemented by opportunities to growing your faith.

 

What advice would you give to current PBA students and/or young alumni who are about to start their first professional full-time job?           

Know who you are. God has made you for a purpose and has your best interest in his hands. The world will tell you to be or do something other than what you have been called to do. Know the truth, know who you are in Christ and live out the truth. God will bless you more than you can imagine. But faith is required.

 

Have you been mentored by anyone in your professional field since entering the workforce?  If so, what impact has that had on you?            

Each position I had, I sought out advice from those who had experience. In my professional career I was never mentored directly. Sometimes it is difficult. If you can find someone that you can trust, you will have a support that is seeking the best for you. When I was at PBA I was mentored by many, but Carrie Bauckman was the Workship Coordinator and she pushed me to get out of my shell and explore.
