What is a Biology Degree
Biology is the study of characteristics, behaviours, and interactions between different organisms. There are a variety of branches of biology that go into further focuses including animals, plants, and even bacteria or full ecosystems. During a biology degree, you’ll learn about the structure of living organisms, how they function, how they grow and develop, how they grow over time, and their environment.
Education and Degrees
Many students who study a Biology BS prefer to study a specific focus. At PBA, we offer a variety of different biology programs for students.

Branches of Biology
Because biology is a wide ranging field, there are multiple different branches that you can choose to focus on. During your first few years of study, you’ll have a chance to explore these different avenues before deciding on a career path.
A few of the different focuses are:
- Botany: The study of plants.
- Zoology: The study of animals.
- Ecology: The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment.
- Genetics and evolutionary biology: The study of heredity, how certain genes are passed down through generations, and the factors that drive diversity
- Microbiology: The study of viruses and bacteria.
- Molecular biology: The study of biological activity at the level of DNA, RNA, and proteins.
Industry Applications
Academia and Research
Students can decide to forge a career in academia by teaching and research. In this field, you’ll not only educate the younger generation, but you’ll conduct experiments, analyse data, and contribute to scientific advancements.
Healthcare
Biologists can go on to work as nurses or in the health sector as health educators like epidemiologists or public health analysts
Environmental Science
Environmental fields like conservation, ecology, and wildlife biology are perfect for graduates who want to work to protect ecosystems and biodiversity on the planet. Working as park rangers or even in conservation organisations or government agencies are all options for biology graduates.
Biotech
A biology degree can open the door to the field of biotechnology, where you can apply what you’ve learned to solve real-world problems through developing new medicines, improving agricultural techniques, and so much more. You may end up working in a lab as an engineer, or analysing data from biotech startups.
How Do I Know if Biology is Right for me?
As a prospective student, you might want to study biology if you’re naturally curious about how living things work. You’ll most likely be asking how and why processes happen in the natural world, you additionally may enjoy carrying out science experiments and engaging in problem-solving activities. Genetics, anatomy, or conservation may interest you. You’ll want to go beyond just learning facts, you’ll want to engage through critical thinking, exploring complex systems, and asking the big questions.
