Every academic year, Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) begins with a convocation chapel service. Returning students and faculty members welcome the incoming class to their new physical, academic, and spiritual home for the next four years.
Convocation mirrors commencement, with faculty members attending in their graduation regalia. This academic tradition dates back to the 12th century and is meant to demonstrate scholastic status, achievements, and to inspire current students. At PBA, it is also a sign of respect for the new students, demonstrating how committed the faculty members are to their fields, with the intent to pass down that passion to the next generation.
Conquering Distractions and Uncertainty
During the service, PBA President Dr. Debra A. Schwinn cautioned the freshman class that the year ahead may have overwhelming moments. She stressed that school, work, friendships, and even social media will fight for their attention. However, she advised students, when staring down what may feel like an uncertain path, to turn to scripture.
Every year at PBA, the president chooses a verse she believes will help guide and unify the students, faculty, and community. The verse of this school year, John 15:5, says: “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Dr. Schwinn reminded the student body that this scripture is not meant to discourage them; instead, it should be viewed as a reminder that with Christ they never have to carry anything alone. Dr. Schwinn told the students to stay close to Christ in crisis, calm, and celebration; He longs to be in every part of their lives.
“As you remain in Him, I pray your life bears fruits that last long after your time here at PBA,” said Dr. Schwinn.
Three Spiritual Pursuits
During Convocation, students also heard from Provost Dr. Stephen Johnson, who encouraged them to Pursue these three goals this academic year: Pursue Abiding, Pursue Community, and Pursue Calling.
When admonishing the students to pursue abiding, Dr. Johnson highlighted the verse of the year, which reminds Jesus’ disciples to stay connected to him every day.
His second point, Pursue Community, was centered around John 15:12, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” Dr. Johnson underlined the importance of remembering: Jesus is love and gave us an example of how to care for one another.
Dr. Johnson concluded with Pursue Calling. “It is from a deep well of intimacy with Christ,” he said, “that you will change the character of your heart, impact those around you, and refine your calling.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Laura Bishop, executive vice president of advancement, encouraged the students to take advantage of the gift of a journal each student received as they left that day.
“Take time to write in this journal, she said, holding one up for all to see. “I look back at my journal from college, and I am amazed at the many things God was teaching me during that precious time.”
