Lincoln Trio to Kick Off Distinguished Artists Series Nov. 2

Palm Beach Atlantic University, in partnership with Northern Trust and Geoffrey and Joanne Stringer of North Palm Beach, presents the Distinguished Artist Series, an unparalleled concert experience featuring internationally acclaimed guest artists and University faculty performing in PBA’s Helen K. Persson Recital Hall in Vera Lea Rinker Hall, 326 Acacia Road, West Palm Beach.

Seating is limited to 150, providing a rare concert setting similar to the private salons of Europe. The series finale concert will be held in the University’s DeSantis Family Chapel with seating limited to 400. The chapel is located at 300 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach.

Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students with ID. Series subscriptions to all six concerts are available for $95 prior to Dec. 14. The series, which runs from November through April, kicks off with an evening of chamber music by The Lincoln Trio on Nov. 2. The trio has been praised for its polished presentations of well-known chamber works and its ability to forge new paths with contemporary repertoire. The group’s reputation as a first-rate ensemble draws an eclectic audience of sophisticated music lovers, young admirers of contemporary programs and students discovering chamber music for the first time. Bringing together performing experience spanning the globe, each member is an artist of international renown.

Pianist Dr. Chiao-Ting “Catherine” Lan will perform an all Mendelssohn program on Dec. 14. Recognized as a child prodigy, Dr. Lan made her solo debut in Japan following her win at the Yamaha “J.O.C.” International Composition Competition at the age of 8. Since then, she has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including British-Columbia Chamber Orchestra, Fifth Avenue Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony and Edmonton Symphony as well as the Naples Philharmonic and the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra.  Her solo career has taken her throughout the U.S., Canada and the Far East.

Soprano Suzanne Galer will perform on Jan. 11. Galer made her New York debuts at CAMI Hall and Weill Hall. She has performed the role of the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “Magic Flute” with such companies as Italy’s Rome Festival and the Long Island Lyric Opera. A finalist in both the Metropolitan Opera Competition and the Chicago Lyric Opera Young Artist Competition, Galer’s career has taken her throughout the United States and abroad including Hawaii, Italy and Thailand. In this her Palm Beach Atlantic University debut, she is joined by fellow faculty and Metropolitan Opera soprano Marilyn Mims and her husband Dean Lloyd Mims, baritone, and tenor Bryon Grohman of Seraphic Fire fame in the popular Liebeslieder Waltzes by Johannes Brahms.

PBA dance faculty Eileen Houghton-Hebron and Jinyoung Lee will present an evening of classical and modern dance on Feb. 15. Formally trained in the Balanchine aesthetic at the School of American Ballet in New York City, Hebron was chosen by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join one of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies, The American Ballet Theatre. Touring internationally for eight years, she won numerous plaudits across the globe for her versatility, grace and technical merit. Korean born Jinyoung Lee came to the U.S. in 1999 to continue her dance career and education, receiving her master’s degree from New York University. She has had an international career as a principal dancer and soloist with dance companies in Washington, New York and Korea.

The Merling Trio and Jun-Ching Lin will present an evening of emotionally charged Brahms on March 1. Recognized as one of today’s premier ensembles, The Merling Trio has been hailed as a brilliantly distinguished group endowed with remarkable gifts of communication, magnificent precision and an impeccable blend of sound. The trio made its New York debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1993, was named a finalist for the Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award in 1994 and has since gone on to perform recitals throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. They will be joined by longtime friend and colleague as well as renowned chamber musician and associate concertmaster of the Atlanta symphony, Jun-Ching Lin.

The series will conclude with the Beethoven Triple Concerto performed by the PBA Symphony with James Buswell, Carol Ou and Dr. Catherine Lan on April 19. Buswell has enjoyed a distinguished career as concerto soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor, lecturer and educator. Since his solo début with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 7, he has appeared as a solo violinist with virtually all of the major orchestras in North America, and throughout Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. From the Presidential Palace in Taiwan to and the National Ukrainian Concert Hall in Kiev, Teatro Argentino in Buenos Aires, New York’s Merkin and Boston’s Jordan Halls, Ou’s versatile artistry has captivated and energized audiences all over the world. Having collaborated with artists such as Hillary Hahn, Timothy Eddy, Midori and András Schiff, Ou’s rich and varied chamber and solo performing experience is clearly evident in her technical mastery and musical depth and sensitivity.
