1.  Do I have to make an appointment?

No. You can always come to the CWE anytime it's open. We accept walk in appointments.

However, if you have a specific time frame you need to meet, it's a good idea to make an appointment. When you walk in, you might have to wait to see a coach; when you have an appointment, that time belongs to you.

2.  How do I make an appointment?

It's easy. You can find all the information for how to make an appointment under the APPOINTMENTS section of this web site.

3.  What should I bring to my appointment?

You should bring the prompt for your assignment so your writing coach can refer to it when looking at your work. You can bring your paper as a hard copy, on a flash drive, or you can use a CWE computer to pull up the assignment from your email or drop box. Bring any other materials necessary to understand your assignment and complete your goals for the session.

4.  What happens during a session?

Your coach will begin by asking you about the class and the assignment. Your coach will then talk with you about your goals for the session and you'll decide what you want to focus on. For the rest of the session, you and your coach will work collaboratively to both improve the project you're working on and to improve your writing skills overall.

5.  What if I only want to work on proofreading during a session?

We can assist you with this area. We are not an editing service where you simply drop off your paper for someone else to correct; however, we work collaboratively with students. We can help you to polish and finish your paper.

6.  Can you help me with formatting sources?

Absolutely! We can assist with APA, MLA, and Turabian formatting.

7.  I don't understand how to integrate sources into my paper. Can you help with that?

Yes! We can show you how to take your source information and integrate it into your paper properly and avoid plagiarism in the process.

8.  What if I'm uncomfortable with my coach?

It's okay. Not everyone is comfortable with everyone. We recommend that you work through your appointment and get the most out of it that you possibly can. Then, when you schedule another appointment, you can always work with someone else. We encourage you to take a look at the coaching section and read about the writing coaches.

9.  How can I become a Writing Coach?

You can find out information about that HERE.

10.  My professor is requiring me to come to the CWE. How do you notify my professor?

When you are required to attend a CWE session for a specific assignment, let your coach know right away. We have a report form we can complete for you, and you can give that to your professor. Please note that we cannot simply sign a form for you without actually completing the session.

11.  I don't know what to write about. Can you help me with brainstorming?

We can definitely help you with brainstorming! Bring your assignment prompt to the CWE. We can help you brainstorm and figure out what interests you and what you could write about for the assignment. We love to brainstorm!
