Robert B. Lloyd is dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and the Loreen Beisswenger Farish Chair for Political Thought. His teaching and research interests are international conflict management, negotiation, and Africa/Middle East.  Before joining PBA he was the Blanche E. Seaver Professor of International Relations at Pepperdine University, founding chair of its international studies and languages division, and head of the international studies major. Dr. Lloyd is also a nonresident Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center in Washington, D.C. and a Fellow with the Summer Institute for Israel Studies at Brandeis University. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Middle East and Africa, the flagship journal of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA). He was a 2014 Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Scholar in India. Dr. Lloyd has published numerous scholarly articles on international conflict management, international negotiation, democratization, and Africa. A recent article, “Ungoverned Spaces and Regional Insecurity: The Case of Mali,” was published in the SAIS Review of International Affairs. Combining his scholarly interests with field involvement, he has been an election observer numerous times in Africa for both the U.S. State Department and the International Republican Institute. He is also an award-winning photographer.
