The University’s men's soccer team was named the No. 2 seed of Super Region 2 during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday evening.
This marks the Sailfish’s fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well
as the fifth consecutive year the team has been named a host.
The Sailfish (14-2-3) reached the finals of the Sunshine State Conference tournament after defeating Florida Southern and Florida Tech. They fell to Lynn in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime. The loss to the Fighting Knights snapped a seven game winning streak.
The Sailfish established a 47-5-6 record over the last three years but will compete
in a Super Region that has produced five national champions and two runners-up in
the last seven seasons.
As the No. 2 seed, Coach McMahon and his squad will face the winner of the first round matchup of No. 7 seed Francis Marion and No. 10 Limestone (Friday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.). PBA will host that match at the Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus Friday. PBA plays the winner 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24.
New in this year’s men’s soccer tournament are four Super Regions that feed into the national semifinals. The former South and Southeast Regions were combined into Super Region 2. The national semifinals will be played in Pittsburgh.
Lynn was named the top seed of the super region after defeating the Sailfish twice during the season. The Fighting Knights will host and face the winner of No. 8 Queens (NC) and No. 9 Lee. Wingate was named the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Young Harris while Florida Tech was awarded the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 West Florida in the second round.
Four super regional winners will head to Pittsburgh to face off in semifinals on Dec. 12 and finals on Dec. 14.
