John Hayes, the Titus Chair for Titus Center for Franchising at Palm Beach Atlantic University

Palm Beach Atlantic University now offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Management with a concentration in franchising. Students who select this option will be prepared for business ownership and/or employment with a franchise company in the United States or abroad.

“Franchising is booming in the USA and across the world,” says Dr. John P. Hayes, director of PBA’s Titus Center for Franchising and a professor in the Rinker School of Business. “Franchise companies are expanding rapidly and as a result they need good employees. They often want employees with a background in franchising and that has created an opportunity for PBA. Few universities offer courses in franchising and PBA is the only university in the state of Florida to offer a franchise concentration as part of the bachelor’s degree program.”

Beginning in the fall 2017 semester, PBA is offering Principles of Franchising, a three-credit-hours course taught by Dr. Hayes, who is one of the few people in the world to have served as a franchisor, a franchisee and an advisor to franchise companies internationally. This entry-level course explores the evolution and growing importance of franchising as a dynamic business strategy and prepares students for franchise business ownership and employment.

Successive courses in the franchise concentration include Franchise Creative Ventures, which uses case studies, guest lectures and field trips to explore franchise management, marketing, and related topics; Franchise Management & Operations, which studies the roles of management, human resources, franchise recruitment, sales, and training and support in franchise operations; and Internship in Franchising where students work in a franchise organization and get exposure to domestic and international operations.

“Earning a business degree is a wise choice, and for students with an entrepreneurial bent, earning a degree with a concentration in franchising will make it easier to start a business or to find a job with a franchise organization,” Dr. Hayes says.
