Accounting

Hometown: Delray Beach, FL

Describe your current job role:

I am a Graduate Assistant at FAU in the Graduate College with an Internal Compliance role. I will be graduating with my Masters of Accounting next Fall (2018) and will then be starting a position as an Auditor with EY.

What professional experience(s) did you have prior to your current job role?

I had internships at various public accounting firms including RSM International, LLP and Ernst & Young.

What do you know now that you wish you had known about being a working professional?

There's a lot of sitting and sitting is the new smoking, so get a standing desk.

"I have been incredibly blessed by the faculty and staff of PBA."

How did PBA prepare you for the world of work?

PBA has amazing business professors who will root for your success and give you the tools you need to achieve whatever version of success you are seeking. I have been incredibly blessed by the faculty and staff of PBA. They are all excellent professionals who you can go to for advice and learn from.

What advice would you give to current PBA students and/or young alumni who are about to start their first professional full-time job?

Although I technically haven't started yet, I would say to forget the notion that you will be fully prepared when you start. Unless you've done that sort of work before, it will be a huge learning curve and that is expected. Secondly, as a wise woman named Suzy Petersen once said, "Be open="open" to opportunities." When someone above you gives you a task that seems daunting and above your pay grade, say yes! It shows you have what it takes to get to the next level in your career and you aren't afraid of a challenge.

Have you been mentored by anyone in your professional field since entering the workforce?

I have been lucky enough to have been mentored by various working professionals, not necessarily in the field of accounting. I think long and hard on decisions I know I have to make. It's helpful to hear a different perspective, and the wisdom of someone with a longer career.  One of my favorite "mentors" in my life is Mike Estrada, who I have known since I was 12 years old! He is a successful businessman whose expertise spans various disciplines, yet will still give me feedback and recommendations on whatever decision I need to make.
