Describe your current job role:

I am currently a Human Resources Specialist/Consultant at NextEra Energy/FPL. I have a critical role supporting over 15,000+ employees from multiple subsidiaries in over 25 states and 4 countries of NextEra Energy. I consult with many via personal encounter, phone, and email related to Payroll, Policy, Time-Entry, PCR’s, Benefits, Onboarding, Retirement, Employment Verification, International Travel, Services provided through our portal, and more. I also support key initiatives such as merit, severance, open="open" enrollment, provides strong and critical support during storm and other natural disasters.

What professional experience(s) did you have prior to your current job role?

Prior to my current position I spent a vast amount of time in the hospitality and realty industry, working for 5-star brands such as The Breakers Palm Beach, The Ritz-Carlton and Ritz-Carlton Residences. I also managed residences on Palm Beach Island, Jupiter Island, and Palm Beach Gardens. After years of a successful hospitality career; I decided to take to a leap of faith and pursue a career in Human Resources. Never be afraid of change, you never know what God has in store for you! Although change may feel frightening, press through the fear. “For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7.

What do you know now that you wish you had known about being a working professional?

“Far from perfect, but always striving to perfect my CURRENT self!” We all have the ability to calculate and control our ambitions, productivity, patience, passion, and resilience. With that being said, we should never place an endpoint to ourselves. Although we may have ultimate goals that we want to reach, we cannot just stop there. KEEP GOING and never become mediocre or comfortable. Stay relevant and think of ways to positively disrupt your area of passion and expertise.

" Always remember WHO you are, and WHY you are doing what you are doing."

How did PBA prepare you for the world of work?

Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) has provided me with distinctive tools to maintain and build even more long lasting professional relationships. I am more confident on how I react and respond to business; while consistently remaining true to who I am. The knowledge gained at PBA has strengthened my moral values while maintaining the transparency and grace needed when faced with adversity.

What advice would you give to current PBA students and/or young alumni who are about to start their first professional full-time job?

“THE EXPERT WAS ONCE A BEGINNER…” Always remember WHO you are, and WHY you are doing what you are doing. Be intentional and strategic about everything you do. Every action you make should lead to the living legacy you want to make in the lives of others. You will have many different days (fantastic, frustrating, inspiring, discouraging, and humorous, etc.). However, make sure that you stay focused on your goals. If things don’t go as planned remain optimistic, because you never know what else may be in store for you.

Have you been mentored by anyone in your professional field since entering the workforce? If so, what impact has that had on you?

Yes, I have a fantastic handful of mentors of quality and strength that have really made an impact in my life. It is extremely important to make sure that you are connected to the right individuals because this will play a huge part in your success. Having mentors has allowed me to refine my personal/professional practices and receive transparency on levels that are rare. It’s a humbling experience to receive insight on the mistakes that my mentors made along the way; to ensure that I am powerful beyond measure. This can serve as a powerful tool for anyone looking to become the best in their field. “CONNECT WITH THE RIGHT FOLKS!”
