Palm Beach Atlantic University graduate Hunter Durham

Hunter Durham '17

Hometown: Springfield, MO

Describe your current job role:

I am an account manager at Facebook. Basically, my role is to consult and advise 60 different advertisers on the best way to invest their money in Facebook advertising. I love this role because I get to help small and medium size businesses grow and achieve their business objectives.

What professional experience(s) did you have prior to your current job role?

Prior to coming to Facebook, I was a program manager for a global partner program at Microsoft via Bridge Partners Consulting. During my time at PBA, I held internships with Microsoft, Dell, and Red Bull.

What do you know now that you wish you had known about being a working professional?

I wish I had known that the biggest way to succeed is by crushing whatever role you are currently in. Everyone wants to take on more projects and responsibilities, but it will be much harder to grow within the company if you do not conquer the core role you are in.

"There are always lessons to be learned in every situation, whether the situation is good or bad."

How did PBA prepare you for the world of work?

One of the biggest ways PBA helped me succeed was molding me into the person I am today. The Supper’s Honors program gave me a deep perspective into the thousands of years of philosophical, political, and foundational thought that help me better connect and relate to people around me. My worldview has allowed me to quickly connect with others and understand their thoughts, which is an invaluable trait in the business world.

What advice would you give to current PBA students and/or young alumni who are about to start their first professional full-time job?

Be content with where you are currently at. I have found that opportunities present themselves often. However, if you are not happy with what you are currently doing, it hinders your ability to grow as a person and as a professional. There are always lessons to be learned in every situation, whether the situation is good or bad. I did not enjoy all of my work experiences during my time at PBA, but I kept a positive attitude, which led me to soak in as much information and skills as possible. That experience has helped me tremendously in my current role.

Have you been mentored by anyone in your professional field since entering the workforce? If so, what impact has that had on you?

I am not currently being mentored. As I mentioned above, it is super important to succeed in your core role first and then look for mentors to help take you to the next level. Over the course of this year, I will be seeking both mentors inside of my company and outside of my company to help me grow as a professional and individual.
