I work as a Contracted Project Manager assigned to Chick-fil-A Inc. in its marketing department. My current project is related to the continuous improvement projects of our customer recovery program. I ensure everyone knows what tasks need to be completed and who is assigned to which task. I also liaison with various departments in the company to assist our team in getting the different elements of our projects completed. In addition, I will take on different tasks related to the project and work to complete those within our various deadlines. In my role, no day looks the same. Project management is like a maze - it is about finding the right path, but sometimes you have to go down the wrong one to discover where the right path leads.
Prior to my current role, I worked in a Chick-fil-A restaurant for four years while attending PBA. During my time there I started as a team member and grew into several leadership roles. I served as a Director of Operations prior to joining the work of the corporate office. In that role, I managed the restaurant in many aspects. I primarily focused on team development, cost management, and sales growth.
I wish I had known that your job title is not as important as you think it is! It is easy to get caught up in what your title may be or in your overall position in a company. However, when you are starting out in your career, and especially with a larger company, focus on building a strong base of skills that will be transferable to various roles throughout the company
"Mentors have and continue to make a tremendous impact on my career and life trajectory."
PBA prepared me for the world of work by helping me understand the importance of forming strong relationships. One of the many reasons I loved my time at PBA was because of the long-lasting friendships that I have been able to form. Relationships are an integral part of any career path. They help make any company you work for feel more like home, and you never know what you can learn from your co-workers.
Focus on performing in your current role without the expectation of the next role. It is important to not get so fixated on the potential for a promotion or a raise that you forget to come into work each day doing the best job you can do! And build relationships for the sake of building strong relationships! Don’t seek out people in your company for what they can get you. In a nutshell, be a person of integrity in your work, and the rest will follow.
Yes! I have a couple mentors that have varying backgrounds. Some of them are from PBA! I have found mentors that focus on my business skills and others that help me with areas of personal growth. Mentors have and continue to make a tremendous impact on my career and life trajectory.
