Hometown: Long Island, New York
I am the marketing specialist for the second largest physics society in the world, the American Physical Society. I work with internal stakeholders in this nonprofit organization on new marketing campaigns, producing / editing videos, advertising, analyzing analytics and managing our social media channels. APS is headquartered in College Park, Maryland, with offices in Washington, D. C. and Ridge, New York.
At PBA I gained professional experience with my capstone senior project. I also interned with Prescription PR where I wrote healthcare marketing blogs for our clients, many of whom were doctors and medical practices in Long Island, New York. I was also an intern for the Stephanie O Show, a celebrity interview show on Long Island News Radio, hosted by an attorney and mother of eight. In addition, I produced student recruiting videos for the PBA admissions office. I was also a digital marketing project manager for ILF Mobile Apps, a monitoring software company.
In addition I volunteered for nonprofits; for five months at All for One Pet Rescue which gets dogs adopted, to staffing special events for ArtiGras, ARC of Palm Beach County, The Lord's Place and the Palm Beach Zoo.
I wish I had known that the time to negotiate salary is when a job is offered. It is harder to get a raise or promotion after you are already hired.
"Keep an open="open" mind and never underestimate yourself. I never thought I would be working side by side with physicists, but it’s a perfect fit for me."
My senior capstone course was with the Institute for Food, Education and Research, which prepared me, because I showcased that successful public relations campaign with a full portfolio when I went on job interviews. Ifeeder.org is an organization founded by the animal food manufacturing industry to make sure the food chain is safe by researching and monitoring animal feed. (They also do the same with pet food.) The goal is to have safe, affordable food and preserve natural resources.
My senior project in film class, produceing a Vans spec commercial (with three classmates) provided a great foundation.
And the theology courses that I took have stuck with me as I navigate the professional world.
Have fun! Be creative and love what you do. Keep an open="open" mind and never underestimate yourself. I never thought I would be working side by side with physicists, but it’s a perfect fit for me.
Professor Wes Jamison was a tough professor at first, but he has since been a huge help and inspiration to me as I pursue my career. He helped me get the job I have now! I also met interesting people at Maynooth University in County Kildare, about 15 miles outside Dublin, Ireland.
