Assistant Professor of Nursing
B.S.N., Rutgers The State University of New Jersey; M.S.N., University of Massachusetts at Lowell; Additional Studies: Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University.
In 1987, Ms. Shutes received her BSN from Rutgers College of Nursing. In 1997, Ms.
Shutes received her M.S.N. from University of Massachusetts, Lowell and received her
certification from ANCC to become a geriatric nurse practitioner. She is currently
attending Florida Atlantic University for completion of her doctorate of nursing,
which she anticipates completing in 2017. Since receiving her M.S.N., Ms. Shutes has
worked as a geriatric nurse practitioner with Evercare in Baltimore, MorseLife Healthcare
in West Palm Beach, and most currently with the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine
in Boca Raton, Florida. She has traveled extensively across the country teaching skilled
nursing facilities how to improve the quality of care, recognize changes in condition,
and reduce readmissions of the frail elderly. She rounds with third year medical students
and residents at local skilled nursing facilities. Ms. Shutes has co-authored numerous
articles for peer reviewed journals including Journal of American Geriatric Society
and Journal of American Medical Directors Association, and has coauthored chapters
in “Geriatrics Models of Care” and Hazzards’ Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology. She
is currently a member of the Geriatric Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma
Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society. She currently lives in Wellington
with her husband, daughter, and four dogs.
