A New England native who came to PBA in the fall of 2002, Professor Bassett has a
master’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Maine, Orono and is
in the process of completing an Ed.D degree in instructional technology and distance
education at Nova Southeastern University.
In addition to her role as director of Online Learning, she also teaches mathematics
for the School of Arts and Sciences. She is actively involved in a variety of distance
learning organizations and is a member of the Advisory Board for Distance Education
at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield, ME where she served as math/science
department chair for 10 years.
Applied academics has been her focus for several years and teaching mathematics from
a contextual approach is her preferred pedagogical style. She works with the National
Tech Prep Network and has served as the applied math facilitator for the state of
Maine since 1993 as well as presenting nationally for CORD (Center for Occupational
Research and Development). She believes that mathematics should be taught as a laboratory
experience uses this approach in her classes.
