Dr. Alves earned a Pharm.D from Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and an M.Sci and D.Sci in molecular and cell biology from Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil, with a Ph.D sandwich program from University of Liverpool. He was an NIH/FOGARTY postdoctoral research associate at University of California at Berkeley and served for two years as a visiting associate professor at the School of Medicine, University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). In 2019 he fell in love with PBA during a research visit and in 2020 joined the Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy as an associate professor. Before coming to PBA, he was an associate professor at Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 10 years. He has coordinated a testing center for the COVID-19 pandemic in Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Alves enjoys teaching, mentoring and motivating students to think about new ideas to be transformed through research projects. The focus areas of his research are: molecular microbiology of bacterial infections, including whole genome sequencing analysis; test of new antimicrobial agents against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and molecular pathogenesis of bacterial infections in animal models. During his free time Dr. Alves likes to bike and discover new places with his wife, Fabiana and kids, Gabriela and Pedro. He is coming from a long-term service as a member of Betania Presbyterian Church in Brazil.
