President Schwinn, based on her experience as a physician and educator, relied on the current guidance from the CDC and other health care authorities, made the decision to open the Palm Beach Atlantic campuses (West Palm Beach and Orlando) this fall. PBA is fortunate in that we have schools of pharmacy, nursing and kinesiology staffed with in-house experts in public health and infectious disease control. They along with the Crisis Management Team are designing protocols for a healthy return to campus for students, faculty and staff.

Although we successfully accomplished remote/online learning in the spring, we believe Palm Beach Atlantic University is best experienced in person. However, all members of the PBA community will need to participate in the hygiene and health safety protocols that are necessary for our return to campus.

The University is formulating a multi-pronged approach that will contribute to safeguarding student health. The plan includes communicating, training, tracking, potentially testing and tracing the entire PBA community. In addition, changes have been or are in the process of being made in some areas of food service. Already this summer, the University has reduced capacity and applied new sanitation standards in Chick-fil-A and Einstein Bros. Bagels, and those measures will be instituted in the newly remodeled Fraser Dining Hall opening this fall. Classrooms and residence halls are being examined for physical distancing and other areas where changes may need to be considered when feasible in accordance with CDC considerations and state guidance.  As employees return to campus from remote work, social distancing is being practiced and workers are requested to a wear mask in common/ open areas of buildings and the campus. Enhanced cleaning protocols are in place for the common campus areas and workers are being instructed on cleaning shared workspaces and personal offices.

Beginning this fall, all students will have access to both medical and mental telehealth services through TimelyMD. Students will have immediate 24/7 access to licensed medical and mental health providers from any web-enabled device. The cost to the student will be an annual fee of $45. There are no additional costs for telehealth visits. We are confident that this will be an added value to our students and will ensure their health and well-being.

As discussed, Palm Beach Atlantic’s plan to return to campus this fall hinges on hygiene practices, testing, tracking and tracing. The University will ask students, staff and faculty to take advantage of training and reminders on frequent hand washing and employ cleaning methods for personal spaces, including residence hall rooms. PBA will continue to practice social distancing on campus, and there will be new protocols for chapel and other forms of assembly. More information will be shared as PBA nears the start of the fall semester.

Appropriate wellness checks will be conducted for the campus community. Anyone who is feeling ill will be encouraged to stay home and seek advice from telemedicine. If a student is diagnosed, quarantine space is available on campus in unused residence hall space at the south end of campus. Palm Beach Atlantic already has protocols in place to address reporting and contact tracing/ tracking exposure.  These protocols address how students will receive their meals during the quarantine period.

We understand that some students may be more comfortable with blending on-campus and online courses this fall. The University will work with those on an individual basis.

Subsequent sessions virtual or on-campus will be announced.

At this time, Palm Beach Atlantic plans an August start on campus. Deposit and payment deadlines are following the usual deadlines.
