Marissa DrumMajor: Music Education
Hometown: Cape Coral, FL

Describe your current job role:

I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Palm Beach Christian Academy.

What professional experience(s) did you have prior to your current job role?

Previously I was involved in smaller music education settings, such as private piano and an elementary homeschool choir. My student teaching experience was in a middle school teaching choir.

What do you know now that you wish you had known about being a working professional?

As a student or recent graduate, take every opportunity to make connections with potential employers and individuals who have succeeded in your field/career.

"Through PBA, I discovered my love for teaching."

How did PBA prepare you for the world of work?

Although my degree focused on music education and my current role is not music related, I was prepared to teach from a Christ-centered perspective - caring for and nurturing the success of students of any age. Through PBA, I discovered my love for teaching.

What advice would you give to current PBA students and/or young alumni who are about to start their first professional full-time job?

Be prepared for anything. Sometimes God will call you to fill a role that is different than you have dreamed of or hoped for. Often you will find yourself in an in-between role, or in a job that may be a stepping stone to your career goal.

Have you been mentored by anyone in your professional field since entering the workforce? If so, what impact has that had on you?

One of the directors at my school has a clear desire to serve the Lord in every area of her life, but most of all in her role as a teacher of young children. She has shown me that as Christian teachers we are called to work hard each day as if we were serving the Lord by being honest, loving, understanding, and forgiving. I am privileged to teach at a Christian school and to be able to talk about the Gospel of Christ openly with my students.
