A group of Palm Beach Atlantic University students and staff delivered a truckload of relief supplies for Haiti's earthquake victims to Missionary Flights International's headquarters in Fort Pierce on Saturday.
The University has partnered with Missionary Flights International, a private non-profit mission aviation service to Christian missions serving in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. In the earthquake's aftermath, the organization has used its aircraft to deliver food, water, medical equipment and other supplies to those in the hardest-hit areas of Haiti.
Twenty-two PBA students, one staff member and a staff member of Sodexo, the University's dining services provider, delivered 600 pounds of food, 13 boxes of hygiene and first aid supplies, 30 cases of bottled water and more than 40 bags of clothing, blankets, sheets and towels.
The trip was coordinated through PBA's Workship office. The donated items had been collected on campus and sorted by student volunteers.
After unloading the items in Fort Pierce, the group volunteered to help sort and box other supplies at the site. The students had the opportunity to interact with other volunteers, missionaries and pilots, and they got a feel for what the organization is all about, Workship Director Carrie Skierski said.
A second trip to deliver more supplies will be planned soon, organizers said.
