For the first time in Sailfish history, a student-athlete has been designated an NCAA Division II National Player of the Week.
Softball pitcher Ashley Jones was named NCAA Div. II National Player of the Week for February 22–28, 2010, by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. That same week she received National Player of the Week honors from the National Christian College Athletic Association (her second of the season and career sixth).
A senior elementary education major from Jensen Beach, Fla., Jones finished the week 3–0 in games against Flagler College and Mercyhurst College.
In game one of a Feb. 26 doubleheader with Flagler College, Jones pitched her second career no-hitter in a seven-inning outing that delivered 14 strikeouts and a 5–0 Sailfish victory. In game two, she pitched five no-hit innings before retiring to the bull pen. She returned to the mound to finish out the game in extra innings for a 4–3 Sailfish win.
Just one day later, Jones was the starting pitcher in game one of a doubleheader with Mercyhurst College. Again she dominated with 10 strikeouts, helping to deliver a 6–0 shutout win for the Fish.
In 20.1 innings of pitching for the week, Jones had no runs scored against her. She allowed just four hits and three walks, and she struck out 34 players. For the season to date, Jones is 7–3 with a 0.53 earned run average and 98 strikeouts in 65.2 innings of play.
