Ecological Study Focus of Summer Research

Armed with rubber boots, collection jars and plenty of sunscreen, PBA students are spending their summer searching for a headcount of three different ecological types: Birds and fish, plankton and invertebrates, and sea grass and mangroves, in our local Intracoastal Waterway, just east of the West Palm Beach campus.
Dr. Thomas Chesnes and students Lory Gort, Isabelle George and Jessica DeHaven, have embarked upon an ecological study as a part of PBA’s “Summer Undergraduate Research Program.” To the north of Okeechobee bridge lies the “South Cove” area, and to the south lies the “Chapel by the Lake.”
University Mourns Helen K. Persson

The Palm Beach Atlantic University community lost a true friend and long-time supporter Monday upon the death of Helen K. Persson. She was 95.
“On top of her many accomplishments, it should be noted that Helen Persson made a career of caring,” University President William M. B. Fleming, Jr. said. “She was most gratified when she was sharing her considerable talents and earned treasure to help others succeed.”
Summer Campers Focus on Missions

Palm Beach Atlantic University will serve as home base for more than 1,200 summer campers with a heart for missions who will be performing community service throughout Palm Beach County during the month of June.
M-FUGE, part of the LifeWay Christian Resources FUGE family of camps, is designed for rising seventh-graders through college-age students.
PBA Science Days Camp Engages Budding Scientists

More than 80 elementary and middle school students from Palm Beach County are learning about science in a fun and exciting way by participating in Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Science Days camp. In partnership with Staples Foundation, the charitable arm of Staples, Inc., the university hosted students on its main campus and gave them opportunities to enjoy hands-on activities, guided by science-savvy camp counselors and PBA science professors.
Each day of camp centered on a specific theme, including rocks, minerals and fossils; the body, nutrition and exercise; the environment; animals; and genetics and forensics.
Music Team to Bring Healing to Burundi

Alumnus Matthew Langford is returning to Burundi this summer to bring hope and comfort to the citizens of this African country that has been torn by violence since declaring its independence more than 50 years ago.
Langford visited Burundi, known for its Royal Drummers, in 2011 with Tirzah International, a non-profit organization based in The Woodlands, Texas. During this trip, Langford met Apollinaire Habonimana, a self-taught Burundian musician who hoped to start a school.
“It hit me hard when I realized that there was no formal music education available in Burundi,” Langford said.
Florida Students Benefit from Aid Increases

University students who are Florida residents will benefit from increases in two important state financial aid programs in the coming year.
The Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) award to students seeking a bachelor’s degree increases $350 from $2,150 to $2,500, which is more than a 16 percent hike. Florida’s Bright Futures award has grown slight, with the Florida Academic up from $100 to $103 and the Florida Medallion up from $75 to $77 per credit hour.
Photography Exhibit Portrays Dance Legends

Arts patron Kenneth Fay had a passion for dance and over his lifetime collected hundreds of photographs that captured the essence of dance in New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
A portion of Fay’s extensive collection is now on exhibit in the Tauni De Lesseps Gallery of the Warren Library through August. Thanks to the generosity of PBA Professor of Dance Dr. Kathleen Klein, an acquaintance of the late Kenneth Fay, the collection was donated to University Archives. The exhibit entitled, “Uncovered Gems: Dance Photography from the Golden Era,” features 36 photographs from the collection.
Political Science Grad Chosen for John Jay Fellows Program

Matthew Crumb, a 2103 graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University's School of Arts and Sciences, has been chosen for the prestigious John Jay Fellows Program offered through the Philadelphia-based John Jay Institute.

Alumna Katia Martinez has been recognized as a 2013 Beginning Teacher of the Year finalist in Palm Beach County.
The Palm Beach County School District and Education Foundation Tuesday partnered to honor first year and mentor teachers. The award distinguishes those teachers whose passion for education motivates them to go above and beyond to inspire their students. Nominated by their principals, the finalists stand out as examples of the excellence within their school and district.
