Urban Youth Impact Founder Named Distinguished Alumnus

November 12, 2013

Former golf professional Bill Hobbs was well into his ministry of serving the inner-city youth of West Palm Beach by the time he earned a degree in human resources management from Palm Beach Atlantic University in 1991.

The Palm Beach Atlantic University Alumni Association will recognize 1991 PBA graduate Bill Hobbs, founder and president of Urban Youth Impact, with the MacArthur School of Leadership Distinguished Alumnus Award. Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) is a private, Christ-centered college in West Palm Beach, Fla., USA.He later formed Urban Youth Impact, a reputable, faith-based nonprofit organization focused on loving, equipping and empowering inner-city youth and their parents to fulfill their God-given purpose.

On Saturday, the University’s Alumni Association will recognize Hobbs with the MacArthur School of Leadership Distinguished Alumnus Award as part of this year’s Homecoming weekend.

A native of Lockport, N.Y., Hobbs and his wife of more than 25 years, Kerry, along with their 9-year-old daughter Rachel, reside in West Palm Beach. Hobbs served 14 years as a PGA golf professional, eventually becoming head professional at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens from 1984 to 1987.

In 1988, Hobbs went into full-time ministry with Palm Beach County Youth for Christ as the Youth Guidance Director.

In his desire to serve at-risk youth, Hobbs began bringing sports equipment and the Bible during his visits to children living in the housing projects along the Tamarind Avenue corridor. He noticed that the same 25 boys would come every week to hear about Jesus, how He loved them and how He had a plan for their lives.

Hobbs, an ordained minister, and his wife formed Urban Youth Impact in 1997. He is the organization’s president and founder. He is also the author of “My Longest Drive, One Man’s Passion for the Urban Poor.”

The formal award presentation will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner in the Weyenberg Center in the Lassiter Student Center. The event is one of the highlights of Homecoming weekend. For information, visit www.pba.edu/homecoming.
