Faculty, Students Awarded 2013 Quality Initiative Grants

The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Palm Beach Atlantic University has announced the recipients of the 2013 Quality Initiative Grants. A total of $32,000 has been awarded.

The recipients are:

♦   Dr. Wesley Borucki, associate professor of history, School of Arts and Sciences, “Ronald Reagan: The Counterrevolution's Leading Man.”

♦   Peter Bowen, junior history major, “The Fountain of Youth: Myth and the Founding of Spanish Florida.”

♦   Jessica Carmean, Orlando graduate student, “Fostering Attachment through Sandtray Therapy: Helping Adoptees Find Hope.”

♦   Dr. Elias Chahine, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, Gregory School of Pharmacy, “Evaluating an Elective Learning Experience in Pharmacy-Led Medical Missions for Pharmacy Residents.”

♦   Dr. Roger Chapman, associate professor of history, School of Arts and Sciences, “Nuclear Weapons and Our Globalizing Century: A Multidisciplinary Challenge for the Christian Academy.”

♦   Dr. Tom Chesnes, associate professor of biology, School of Arts and Sciences, “Effectiveness of  Aquatic Traps on the Collection of the Semi-Aquatic Mangrove Salt Marsh Snake, Nerodia clarkia compressicauda” and Hannah Boss, junior biology major, “Morphological Variation in Populations of the Mangrove Salt Marsh Snake, Nerodia clarkia compressicauda, in Everglades National Park and No Name Key, Fla.”

♦   Dr. David Compton, professor of psychology, School of Education and Behavioral Studies, “An Examination of the Effects of Agmatine on Neurological and Behavioral Function in Middle-Age and Senescent Sprague-Dawley Rats.”

♦   Dr. Vic Copan, associate professor of ministry, leadership and biblical studies, School of Ministry, “Research and Writing a Spiritual Formation Textbook.”

♦   Dr. Matt DellaVecchia, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, Gregory School of Pharmacy, and Aylssa Claudio, pharmacy student, “Assessing the Impact of a Pharmacy Student-led Class Project on Undergraduate Students in a Medicinal Chemistry Course.”

♦   Dr. Kathleen Klein, associate professor of dance, School of Music and Fine Arts, “State of the Arts in the 21st Century: A Snapshot of Dance Communities in the Northeast, the Southeast, the Midwest, the Northwest and the Southwest regions.”

♦   Stephen Rineer, junior biology major, “Molecular Analysis of Pond Apple's Anti-Cancer effects on Breast Cancer Cell Lines.”

♦   Dr. Marile Santamarina, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, Gregory School of Pharmacy, “Developing Empathy and Comprehensive Patient Care Amongst Health Care Professionals.”

♦   Chris Schiel, pharmacy student, “Student Pharmacists’ Knowledge and Perceptions of Managed Care Pharmacy.”

♦   Dr. Linda Sedlacek, assistant professor of earth science and oceanograpy, School of Arts and Sciences, “Children Eat Their Parents? Documenting the Conditions Leading to Crustacean Young Eating Their Parents.”

♦   Dr. Mariette Sourial, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, Gregory School of Pharmacy, “Improving High-Risk Patients’ Medication Experience Across the Continuum of Care through Interprofessional Education in a Rural Community.”

♦   Dr. Sandra Szegedi, assistant professor of chemistry, School of Arts and Sciences, “Dimerization Dilemma: Does RsrI DNA Methyltransferase Bind and Methylate DNA as a Dimeric or Monomeric Enzyme?”

♦   Dr. Peggy VanArman, professor of biology, School of Arts and Sciences, Keegan Baldock, sophomore medicinal and biological major; Isabelle George, sophomore biology major; and Kyle Holly, freshman biology major, “Nutrients (C, N, P) in Leaves of Pond Apple (Annona glabra) and Surrounding Soil and Water in a Cypress-Pond Apple Swamp in the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, (LNWR), Boynton Beach, Fla.”
