PBA Student Achieves First With Nursing Distinction Award

May 16, 2012

Ana Salguero discovered as a high school student that she enjoyed helping people in their hour of need.

She decided to study at Palm Beach Atlantic University's School of Nursing, where she became a member of the University’s Nursing Student Association and the Nurses Christian Fellowship, and she led the nursing school’s Bible study.

Palm Beach Atlantic University graduate Ana Salguero recently received the Palm Healthcare Foundation's Nursing Distinction Award in the student category. Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) is a private, accredited, Christ-centered college located in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA.

Recently, her dedication was recognized when she became the first PBA student to receive the Palm Healthcare Foundation’s Nursing Distinction Award in the student category.

Salguero received the award during a celebration dinner at The Breakers in Palm Beach on May 4, a day before she graduated from PBA.

“This award is a wonderful honor for both PBA and me,” Salguero said. “I was absolutely ecstatic to represent PBA on that evening at The Breakers, especially because I know the number of wonderful nursing students that I walk among daily. I just know I wouldn't have come this far without the dedicated faculty in the School of Nursing. It is truly a privilege, and I am so happy to be the vessel that humbly represents Christ.”

Dr. Joanne Masella, dean of the School of Nursing, said the faculty and students are proud of Salguero. “She is a great example of how we strive to build the body of Christ, one nursing student at a time,” she said.

Previously, PBA nursing faculty member Dr. Judy Campbell received the 2005 Nurse of the Year award from the Palm Healthcare Foundation.

Salguero, 22, is a native of Zacapa, Guatemala who grew up in Lake Worth. She attended Park Vista Community High School, where she enrolled in the health occupations academy.

In addition to her involvements at PBA, Salguero also has been a Sunday school teacher at Apostolic Lutheran Church. She serves as an Awana Leader at Grace Fellowship for 3rd- through 6th-grade girls and volunteers at a recovery ministry offered through the Lutheran Church and Trinity International Church.

Salguero now works in the Oncology Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital. She also plans to participate in short-term mission trips, and she said she is contemplating graduate school as well.
