Team Captain, Writing Tutor Chosen for Student Leader Award

Logan Thomas, a mathematics major from Melbourne, Fla., and Tay Mazzola, an English and history major from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., have been named recipients of Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Outstanding Student Leader Award.

The two seniors were selected from a pool of student leaders who were nominated by campus department heads. The award is presented to seniors who demonstrate dedication to excellence in Christian leadership, strong involvement in all aspects of student life and a GPA above 3.0.

Thomas is a pitcher who serves as the captain of the Sailfish baseball team, and he is president of PBA’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has a 4.0 GPA, and he has been inducted into the PBA chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma honor society, selected as a National Christian College Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete and been named to the NCCAA All-Region Team. Thomas is minoring in Biblical studies. He plans to pursue graduate studies at the University of Florida upon graduation, and he hopes to become a mechanical engineer.

Mazzola is a double majoring in history and English, and she also is minoring in education. She has distinguished herself as a peer tutor at the Center for Writing Excellence (CWE). Mazzola also instituted the first campus wide book drive supporting the nonprofit CARE for AIDS. She traveled to Haiti with a PBA mission team in spring 2011, is a small group leader for high school students and hosts a community book club. She is a member of Who’s Who, Phi Alpha Theta and Sigma Tau Delta. She also recently presented at PBA’s first Interdisciplinary Research Conference. Upon graduation Mazzola will attend Baylor University, where she has been offered a full scholarship for the Master of Arts program in history.

Thomas and Mazzola were recognized during a reception and dinner sponsored by Student Development. During the dinner, juniors Bobbi Thornton of Tiverton, R.I., and Matt Crumb of Mokena, Ill., were recognized as recipients of the Servant Leadership Award.

Also, the Rothschild Leadership Scholarship was presented to freshman Caleb Hitchcock of Royal Palm Beach.
