Student, Staff Members Who Have 'Led by Example' Recognized

January 19, 2012

Palm Beach Atlantic University Interim President William M.B. Fleming Jr. this week recognized a student-athlete and three employees whose actions, he said, exemplified this year’s University-wide theme, “Lead by Example.” It was the second such presentation this academic year.

Volleyball standout Mariela Quesada; Ilene Wallmueller, a nurse practitioner with Health and Wellness; Mitchell Adams, web developer for Campus Information Services; and cheerleading and dance team coach Carrie Gomez each received clear Lucite paperweights bearing the words “Lead by Example.”

The surprise presentation took place in Sachs Hall. Similar presentations will occur throughout the school year to recognize individuals who have gone the extra mile, Interim President Fleming said.

“As we go from good to great at Palm Beach Atlantic University, we need great people committed to a great cause,” he said. “And there is nothing more impactful than Christian higher education.”

Quesada, of San Jose, Costa Rica, recently was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association-National Christian College Athletic Association (AVCA NCCAA) Player of the Year. She was recognized at the AVCA annual convention in San Antonio in December. During the event, Quesada joined other All-Americans and national players of the year for an autograph session, and afterward they were introduced during second and third set of the NCAA championship match.

Wallmueller, who is in her fourth year with Health and Wellness, was recognized for going above and beyond in her interactions with several PBA students.

Adams was recognized for his work in implementing online student registration, Interim President Fleming said. Adams has served at PBA since 2009.

Gomez’s recognition was for her outstanding work with the University’s spirit squads during the past four years. In addition to teaching the cheerleaders and dance team members about athletics, she also has taught them valuable life lessons, Interim President Fleming said. Gomez also serves on the admissions team in the Gregory School of Pharmacy, a position she has held since 2009.
