The University family has lost a long-time member and supporter with the death December 4 of Trustee Emeritus Judge Thomas E. Lee, Jr. '93 of Tequesta, Fla. He was 89.
Interim President William M. B. Fleming, Jr. remembered Judge Lee as a “great American patriot, war hero, legal advocate, trustee and PBA alumnus.”
Judge Lee earned a bachelor of science degree in management of human resources from Palm Beach Atlantic in 1993. He was appointed to the board of trustees in 1994 and served nearly four complete terms. He was named a trustee emeritus in 2006.
A graduate of the University of Miami Law School, he was admitted to the bar in February 1951, and remained a member of the Bar Association for more than 50 years. He served as a Florida State Beverage Director, 1961-1963; Miami Circuit Judge, Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, 1963-1972; and Chief Circuit Judge from 1972-1974. He retired from the court in 1974 and practiced law in Miami and Jupiter, Fla. until his retirement in 2002.
A resident of Florida since 1932, he is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth Phelps Lee, their five children, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2011 at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center St., Jupiter. Friends are invited to meet with the family from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, December 8 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
