The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s volleyball team won their second straight regional title by defeating No. 2 seed Southern Wesleyan University in three sets November 19 during the NCCAA South Regional Tournament.
The Sailfish improve to 27-3 on the season, and clinched an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, November 30 to December 3.
The Warriors provided the Sailfish a solid challenge. However, the Fish utilized their home court advantage, and pushed through for set victories of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-13.
Junior Mariela Quesada assisted her team during the three sets as she hammered home 22 kills to lead all players, while registering an impressive .606 attacking percentage. For this, she earned All-Region recognition following the match.
Freshman Anna Hays also showed why she has a bright future ahead with nine kills off the bench on 19 attacks (.376 attacking percentage), and sophomore Christina Alessi added in five kills. Becca Acevedo joined Quesada on the All-Region First Team, and she put together a solid performance of 38 assists while adding in three service aces and four digs.
Allie Warren managed a match-high 18 digs in a solid PBA defensive effort that saw SWU limited to a .169 overall attacking percentage. SWU was paced by six kills from Tierza Rangel, while setter Hayley Hoover dished out 19 assists in the loss.
