2011 Nursing Class Attains 97 Percent Pass Rate on Exam

September 26, 2011

The 2011 graduating class of Palm Beach Atlantic University’s School of Nursing has achieved a 97 percent pass rate on its first attempt at the national licensing exam, according to Dean Joanne Masella.

This year, 28 of the 29 students who took the exam passed it. "We attribute this outcome to our faculty's hard work as a team in preparing the students and the dedication the students have in preparing themselves," Dr. Masella said. "It’s a team effort. We walk with them in their journey."

Members of the School of Nursing Class of 2011 According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the 2011 national licensure examination pass rate for first-time candidates on the baccalaureate degree (B.S.N.) level is 87.7 percent, and the 2011 pass rate for the state of Florida is 88 percent. The state expects each school of nursing to achieve an examination pass rate of 85-86 percent to remain in good standing.

Entry into the practice of nursing in the United States is regulated by the licensing authorities within each state. To ensure public protection, each state requires a candidate for licensure to pass an examination that measures the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level registered nurse. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing has developed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, which is used by state and boards of nursing to assist in making licensure decisions.

Palm Beach Atlantic’s School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (B.S.N.) and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Florida Board of Nursing. The School of Nursing prepares professional, competent nurses who are reflective, inquiring and able to apply nursing theory and process along with technical nursing skills within the context of the Christian worldview. The school, located in Oceanview Hall on the University’s West Palm Beach campus, features a state-of-the-art nursing skills lab and partnerships with more than six local hospitals, which provides a wide variety of clinical nursing experiences for students.
