More than 600 teens from churches across Florida and the Southeast will join Palm Beach Atlantic University’s community from Aug. 1 to 5. Main campus will be abuzz with students attending Student Life Camp 2011.
Student Life, an organization based in Birmingham, Ala., hosts Christian-centered summer camps across the country for 7th-12th graders, this year making stops in Colorado, Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania to name a few. Its mission is to help teenagers know Christ’s word through partnership with local churches. The organization provides events and Bible-based ministry resources, which support youth pastors, ministry leaders, workers and parents of teens.
It’s PBA’s third summer as the South Florida host of the large-scale event. Students will be staying in PBA dormitories as the University continues to accommodate a steadily increasing number of campers. In 2009 there were 425 participants.
Student Life’s theme for 2011 is “Devoted” based on Deuteronomy 6:5: Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. The camp aims to answer questions such as, what does it take to be a fully committed disciple? And, how do we develop into dedicated and faithful followers of Jesus?
Student Life leaders as well as adults from the local churches will be involved in the camp. As part of the camp’s mission component, campers can volunteer to take part in local mission projects. This year approximately 143 of the campers will go off site during the day for mission work. Activities on campus include Bible teaching and study, as well as recreation activities.
The speaker for 2011 is Chris Brooks. Brooks earned a Master of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School, and has been a producer, writer and performer with Student Life for six years. Worship leader is Chris Orr began leading worship at Student Life Camp in 2003. He also is lead singer of the Chris Orr Band, a Christian-rock group.
