Dec. 7, 2010

In her work as a swimming coach, Rophe Woods of Jupiter is able to make full use of the skills she's learning as a student in Palm Beach Atlantic University's MacArthur School of Leadership.

Ultimately Woods hopes to start a gymnasium where young people can come both for life coaching and physical fitness.

Woods, who is working toward a master's degree in leadership, was one of six MacArthur School students who recently received the 2010-2011 Catherine T. MacArthur Scholarship, The scholarship, named for Mrs. MacArthur, is funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

The scholarship program supports adults going back to college who are displaced workers, working parents, parents returning to the workplace or those currently employed who are trying to move ahead in their careers. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, the recipients' potential for future achievement and financial need.

In her scholarship application, Woods wrote that she wants to start a gym targeting adolescents and young adults. She hopes to provide mentoring as well as a place for physical activity.

"Once my education is finished, I aspire to be able to open the gym and give back to the community here in West Palm by helping the youth of the area reach their potential," Woods wrote.

The scholarship is for $1,300 divided between two semesters. Scholarships are offered one time only per student and are nonrenewable.

In addition to Woods, the other fall scholarship recipients are:

  • Jaime Greene of Greenacres, who is pursuing a master's degree in leadership.
  • Timothy Price of Stuart, who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in organizational management.
  • Donna Rouzeau of Sunrise, who is pursuing a master's degree in leadership.
  • Margaret Soucy of West Palm Beach, who is pursuing a master's degree in leadership.
  • Martha Uline of Loxahatchee, who is pursuing a master's degree in leadership.

Scholarship applications are being accepted for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 10. The application deadline is Dec. 13. For information, talk with an admissions counselor at either the West Palm Beach campus, (561) 803-2122, or the Wellington campus, (561) 803-2850.
