Conference on Understanding Scripture in a Diverse World

January 19, 2011
Jan. 19, 2011

Palm Beach Atlantic University will participate as a partner site with the Trinity Institute in New York to present the conference, "Reading Scripture through Other Eyes," Saturday and Sunday, January 29 and 30, at the University's DeSantis Family Chapel, 300 Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach. The conference is free. Call Kathy Maxwell, assistant professor in the School of Ministry at 561-803-2601, for information.

Dr. Brueggemann
The conference addresses the vital topic of reading and understanding scripture in our diverse world. How do you read scripture? How do people of other cultures read scripture? How can we learn to better read scripture together?

The conference addresses the questions:

  • How do we read scripture?
  • What concerns do scholars have when reading scripture?
  • What does an ordinary reader bring?
  • How does our culture influence what we may find in scripture?
  • How do we read scripture together?

Noted scholars Dr. Walter Brueggemann, Dr. Teresa Okure and Dr. Gerald West will present via webcast 7:45 - 10 p.m. Saturday.

Dr. Hays

Dr. Danny Hays, dean of the Pruet School of Christian Studies at Ouachita Baptist University and co-author of Grasping God's Word, will respond to conference speakers live at Palm Beach Atlantic University 4 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Attendees also will have the opportunity to participate in small group discussions to encourage conversations about how to apply these ideas here in Palm Beach County.
