Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, who led the Department of Justice through both the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, offered three main points to Palm Beach Atlantic University graduates during the fall commencement ceremony.

Palm Beach Atlantic University trustees endorsed the administration’s proposal to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program to prepare graduates for state licensure to serve as nurse practitioners, pending approval by the University’s accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). “In its history, Palm Beach Atlantic’s School of Nursing has established a stellar reputation in the community preparing nurses who are competent in their clinical skills as well as caring and sensitive in their relationships with patients and colleagues,” Dr. Joseph A. Kloba, provost and chief academic officer, said. “Faculty and students frequently are recognized by regional healthcare organizations as accomplished educators and outstanding students and employees. I am confident that the proposed DNP program will continue this proud tradition as PBA graduates continue to impact the healthcare community in significant ways.”

Since arriving at Palm Beach Atlantic University as a transfer student in 2011, Catherine Drensek has worked in various roles on 13 film shoots or projects, some of which she has either directed or codirected. On Saturday, Drensek will be recognized as the Outstanding Graduate of the School of Communication and Media.

Christian speaker and author James Choung will speak to Palm Beach Atlantic University students in January. His book, "True Story: A Christianity Worth Believing In," is being used in small groups across campus. He will speak on that book's follow-up volume, "Real Life: A Christianity Worth Living Out," at 8 p.m. Jan. 21-22 in the DeSantis Family Chapel and also during the 11 a.m. chapel hour on Jan. 22-23. The talks are free and open to the public.

The LeMieux Center for Public Policy at Palm Beach Atlantic University will host "A Conversation with Former Attorney General John Ashcroft" at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Rinker Boardroom in the Warren Library, 300 Pembroke Place, West Palm Beach. The event is free and open to the public.

Mary Jacobs, director of special projects and parent relations at Palm Beach Atlantic University, was named PBA's 2013 Employee of the Year. Candidates for this honor are nominated by their peers, and a committee selects the recipient.

Men's LAX Sets 2014 Sailfish Shootout
