Spanish River High School's first-place win on Saturday was its second in the three-year history of the High School Mathematics Competition at Palm Beach Atlantic University. In all, 11 teams used HP tablet computers and DyKnow interactive software to solve algebra, trigonometry, statistics and pre-calculus problems.

The students were recognized at the 28th annual Women in Leadership Luncheon Thursday. Recognized for their achievements were Natalie Diaz of Davie, Szilvia Gagyi of Boynton Beach, Kari Lambrechts of Hawthom Woods, Ill., Alba Medrano of Lake Worth, and Katie Runyon of Quincy, Ill.

Speaking to the more than 400 graduates at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux reflected on the speech he gave to his own classmates as an undergraduate at Emory University nearly 20 years ago. "I said on that day that commencement is a beginning, and it is for you," Sen. LeMieux told the graduates at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. "The best years of your life are yet to come."

South Africa natives Arno van Vuuren and his brother, Richter, will graduate on Saturday from Palm Beach Atlantic University. Both have distinguished themselves in and out of the classroom.
