Dr. Thomas has conducted biological research in the rain forests of Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama, and has published several papers on tropical bat biology. During the 26 years that he has been at PBA, Dr. Thomas has taught courses in introductory biology, comparative vertebrate anatomy, human anatomy and physiology, ecology, natural history of vertebrates, senior research and the biology of the tropical rain forests. He received the Charles and Hazel Corts Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1998.
Dr. Thomas has served as Biology Department Coordinator for 12 years and has been the science representative to the PBA teacher education program for 16 years. He also has served the Florida Department of Education through his participation in a committee that evaluated the state teacher exams at the Institute for Instructional Research and Practice.
Active in the community, he has served on the board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Palm Beach County, has been a Big Brother himself and delights in giving guest lectures to local schools and senior citizen groups.
