Dr. Shyers is a professor of counseling at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Orlando Campus; he is also a licensed mental health counselor and a qualified mental health counselor supervisor in Florida. Dr. Shyers is a member of the American Counseling Association, the American Mental Health Counselor’s Association, and the American Association of Christian Counselors. He is also a life member of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for academic and professional counseling. Dr. Shyers has served on numerous committees and boards with professional associations at both the state and national level, and has served as an adjunct professor at numerous universities since 1978. Along with maintaining an extensive teaching and supervision schedule, Dr. Shyers maintains a private practice as a clinical psychotherapist, where he specializes in trauma and personality disorders. He has been a registered lobbyist in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., advocating for consumer mental health issues. Dr. Shyers was appointed to the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling on which he served eight years (six years as the board’s chairman). He currently continues to serve on one of the Board’s probable cause panels. Dr. Shyers’ research, comparing social adjustment between homeschooled and traditionally schooled children, received the ERIC/CAPS national research award. He has presented clinical workshops at numerous state and national conferences, and is a frequent speaker at churches throughout the southeast. Dr. Shyers has been selected as Counselor of the Year by AMHCA and has received numerous other awards as a consumer mental health advocate. He has been married to his wife Faye for 46 years, and they have two adult daughters and two grandchildren. Dr. Shyers and his wife are active members of the Mount Dora Church of Christ. His hobbies include fast cars and prospecting for gold.
