Dr. Masella came to Palm Beach County in 1975 to begin nursing practice at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, FL. Over a 20 year period she served in various positions related to clinical and education. After receiving her BSN she began teaching as adjunct faculty at both Palm Beach Community College and Florida Atlantic University. Since 1995 Dr. Masella has been a member of the full-time nursing faculty at PBCC, serving as Professor, Department Chair, and for the past 4 years as Program Director. In the director role she oversees the operations of both a full-time and part-time nursing program at Lake Worth, along with a full-time nursing program in Belle Glade. Her accomplishments include doubling the size of the day program, establishing a part-time evening weekend program that is grant funded by Palm Healthcare Foundation, and establishing a new grant funded program for the western community in Belle Glade. She has brought online education to the nursing program with all theory classes available on a blackboard platform. Dr. Masella has doubled the size of the computer testing lab and skills lab by acquiring grant funds. She is active in many nursing organizations such as the National League for Nursing, where she serves on the Board of Directors at the State level. Joanne holds membership in the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing, Florida Nurses Association, and Florida Council of Nursing Education Administrators. Dr. Masella has presented at several nursing conferences in the areas of caring philosophy in nursing and nursing student retention. She has published one clinical monograph related to lung disease. Her expertise is related to the at-risk student in nursing education, with special interest in individualized teaching plans, learning groups, student and peer mentoring, and active learning modalities. She is also active in the Special Olympics organization and Association of retarded citizens of Palm Beach County. Joanne has been married for 32 years and she and her husband Richard live in Boynton Beach with their 27 year old son Marc. Their 28 year old son lives in Plantation, FL with his family and the only Masella grandchild, Richard Joseph, age 6. The Masella’s are members of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Delray Beach, FL where they serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. They also distribute communion to hospitalized individuals at Bethesda Memorial Hospital.
