A Christmas Opera: 'Amahl and the Night Visitors'

Dec 7, 2014 3:00 PM
"Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Gian-Carlo Menotti
Produced and Directed by Marilyn Mims
Fully Staged with Orchestra
3 p.m. Dec. 7
DeSantis Family Chapel
Setting: The action takes place in the poor home of a crippled boy named Amahl and his mother. When Gian-Carlo Menotti was a young man in Italy, he deeply admired the painting “The Adoration of the Magi” by Hieronymous Bosch. After he had come to America to study composition at the Curtis Institute, he was asked by NBC Television to write the first opera ever to be composed for the medium of television. Since the work was to be aired around Christmas, Menotti was struck with his recollection of this painting, and he decided to write a story about a visit to the humble home of Amahl — a visit that just might have taken place as the kings traveled on their way to Bethlehem. The setting takes on a mystical quality of the imagination as we think, “what if … .” Join us now as we take a journey, a journey of three kings who have followed an extraordinary star in hopes of finding the long-awaited Messiah. Join us as we tell of a crippled boy and his destitute mother who welcome these strange foreigners into their home for a night’s rest. Join us as we sing of the miracle of Christmas.
