PBA Interim President Fleming on the Death of Coach Gary Carter

Palm Beach Atlantic University Interim President William M.B. Flaming Jr. PBA is a private, accredited, Christ-centered college in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA.
President Fleming

It is my sad duty to announce the passing of PBA’s Head Baseball Coach and brother-in-Christ Gary Carter today. He died peacefully this afternoon, having been surrounded by his family, including daughter Kimmy Bloemers, head softball coach at PBA, and Kyle Bloemers, assistant athletic director for compliance.

We grieve with his wife, Sandy, and their son, D.J., and daughter, Christy. We, his colleagues, are comforted by our Christian faith, a faith that Gary Carter lived each day of his life.

After a standout Major League Baseball career, which was recognized by his induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, Gary Carter continued to contribute to the sport as an announcer and minor league manager before signing on at PBA.

Gary Carter’s death is a very personal loss to me. I have known Gary for more than 20 years. He was very active in the local community and was respected as a husband, father, grandfather and supporter of charitable causes. His fellow players called him “The Kid,” for his exuberance on and off the field, and I did, too. He called me, “Billy.” Years before he officially joined the University family, he hosted the annual Alumni Association Scholarship Golf Tournament and it was a treat to work with him each year. He also served on the Blue Ribbon Committee to plan the Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus.

The University will hold a memorial service where we will remember his life and devotion to Christ. That will be planned in consultation with the Carter family and announced in the future.
