Coach Carter to Seek Medical Treatment

May 21, 2011

Palm Beach Atlantic University head baseball coach and Major League Baseball Hall-of-Fame player Gary Carter announced Saturday that he will seek medical treatment in the coming days after receiving an initial diagnosis of several small brain tumors.

“Earlier today, I learned that four very small tumors have been found on my brain, following an MRI on Friday at a West Palm Beach facility,” said Carter. “I am scheduled to be examined further Thursday at Duke Medical Center and we will learn more at that time about my diagnosis. My wife, Sandy, and our children and family thank you for your thoughts and prayers. We ask that you please respect our privacy as we learn more about my medical condition. Thank you.”

“The University is a community of faith and we know God will strengthen and support The Kid and his family,” Interim President William M. B. Fleming, Jr.said. “We know he will receive all-star care and feel the love of the PBA family.”

Having concluded his second season as the head coach of the NCAA Division II Sailfish, Carter will travel with his family to North Carolina next week to begin a stage of treatments and testing involving the brain tumors.

“Coach Carter is an inspiring and courageous individual who we are proud to have represent Palm Beach Atlantic University,” Athletic Director Bob White said. “He has overcome many obstacles throughout his life to become one of baseball’s all-time greats and we are confident that through the healing power of Jesus Christ that this will be another encouraging chapter in his amazing life.”

Carter is joined at Palm Beach Atlantic by his daughter, Kimmy Bloemers, who recently completed her fifth season as the head softball coach of the Sailfish, and son-in-law, Kyle, who serves as an assistant athletic director.
