Former Sailfish Players Return for Annual Athletic Games

October 18, 2011

Palm Beach Atlantic University alumni returned to relive their days as student athletes by participating in the Annual Alumni Athletic Men's Soccer and Women's Softball Games hosted by Alumni Relations and PBA Athletics.

"The purpose of the Alumni Athletic Game is to reconnect alumni with their alma mater’s athletic program and former players," said Delesa Hinkle Morris '85, assistant vice president for alumni relations and annual fund at PBA.

The men's soccer game took place Oct. 8 at Magic Jack Field in West Palm Beach. Both teams consisted of former Sailfish players living in Florida, and also 2010 PBA Sports Hall of Famer Miguel Lemming,'04, '06, who traveled from New Jersey to participate. After a soccer career playing in his native Zimbabwe for the Zimbabwe National Team, Lemming came to the U.S. in 2001 in pursuit of a college education eventually leading to PBA where he played a career total 58 games for the Sailfish tallying 37 goals, 22 assists and 96 points.

Lemming and his peers were joined in the alumni game by Head Men's Coach Jose Gomez.

On Oct. 15, PBA alumnae took to the softball field at Dave Manzo Field at Dick Brown Park in Lake Worth. Kimmy Bloemers, head softball coach and Ron Kotouch, assistant softball coach, led a game of slow pitch softball with combined teams of alumnae and current PBA softball players. Kotouch served as pitcher. Alumnae traveled from throughout Florida to participate.

For both games, there were family of alumni and students there to cheer them on. Lunch followed, providing time for fellowship.

"We recognize the fact that alumni contributed to the success and strength of the PBA athletic program, and we want to keep them engaged in the life of the University," Morris said.
