May 3 Alumnae Tea to Feature Derby Day Fashions, Austen Talk

The Palm Beach Atlantic University Alumni Association will host the Afternoon Tea and Silent Auction at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at The Country Club at Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens.

Tickets are $75 per person and $50 for alumni who graduated after 2008. The event benefits the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. Veteran television news anchor Chandra Bill-Rabenecker, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees, will serve as emcee. Palm Beach Atlantic University professors of English Dr. Kathleen Anderson and Dr. Susan Jones will speak about their book, “Jane Austen’s Guide to Thrift.” The book, published in 2013, teaches the reader “how to live a life of elegant economy and joyful generosity — whether you’ve as much as Emma Woodhouse or as little as Miss Bates.” Dr. Anderson and Dr. Jones are active in the Jane Austen Society of North America and are both recipients of Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Charles and Hazel Corts Award for Outstanding Teaching.

This year’s theme is “Fashion Sense & Sensibili-Tea,” and the afternoon will include a vintage fashion show, silent auction and door prizes with special prizes awarded to guests with the best Kentucky Derby-themed attire.

The afternoon tea menu includes Southern-style lemonade and sweet iced tea with a mint garnish, an afternoon tea service, cranberry scones with orange butter, clotted cream, preserves, assorted tea sandwiches, tea cookies, bonbons and petit fours. 

Natalie Alvarez ’11 is chair of the event committee with co-chairs Janie Thomas Fogt ’85 and Deborah Bowmar-Jaffe ’89/’92 MBA.
