Palm Beach County School District Presents Gold Award to PBA

Dr. Fred Browning (second from left), associate professor of physics at Palm Beach Atlantic University, watches as Conniston Middle School students and teachers attempt to launch a pumpkin into the air using a spring-operated mechanism and scientific principles. Dr. Browning and several of his students at PBA had been working with after-school classes at Conniston to construct catapults prior to the "Flying Pumpkins" event, which was held on the athletic fields at Conniston in October 2013.

At this year’s Volunteer and Business Partners Awards Breakfast for the School District of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Atlantic University received the Gold Award in the Not-for-Profit category.

About 500 volunteers, business partners and community members attended the recognition event, presented by the school district’s Office of Community Involvement and held recently at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. The faculty and administration of Conniston Middle School nominated PBA for the award.

Conniston Middle School and PBA are members of the Parker Avenue Consortium. The consortium was developed as a means to bring resources together to benefit kindergarten through university students and their families, and ultimately to bring a renewed vitality to the neighborhood near PBA's Rinker Athletic Campus.
