WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ––– Palm Beach Atlantic Men’s Lacrosse will host the fifth annual Sailfish Shootout beginning March 1, 2014, bringing hundreds of players and their fans from across the United States to the Palm Beaches over three weeks.
PBA faces Northern Colorado in the opening match. In total, the Sailfish will play seven teams with five slates for their first meeting. The action continues March 5 against No. 5-ranked Grove City. The Wolverines, a Christian college from Grove City, Pa., are expected to climb even higher in 2014’s preseason rankings and carry over a host of talent from 2013.
On March 8, Palm Beach Atlantic faces their northeastern rival, No. 7-ranked U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Bears and Sailfish have beaten each other just once. PBA notched a 9-8, 2OT win in 2011, while in 2012, USCGA used a seven-goal fourth quarter to sink the Sailfish, 15-14. This will be their last regular season meeting before the Bears advance to NCAA-D3 status.
PBA’s fourth Sailfish Shootout game comes 24 hours later against No. 25-ranked Stonehill College March 9. In their only other match to date, PBA bested the Skyhawks in 2010’s Sailfish Shootout, 13-11.
Following one day’s rest, the ’Fish are back in action on March 14 against No. 24 Lindenwood–Belleville. The Lynx, out of Belleville, Ill., were a contender in the race for a GRLC Championship last season and are seeking to resume the hunt. On March 15, PBA hosts the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers out of Austin, Texas. They finished 2-8 in 2013.
In all the Sailfish and their head coach Chris Southard will face six teams ranked in the final 2013 Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division II Coaches Poll during the 2014 season that starts in January.
The Sailfish, who were ranked as high as No. 6 nationally last season, open the 2014 campaign at home Jan. 29 against Florida Atlantic University. Palm Beach Atlantic met the Owls in last year’s opener, winning 16-6, and are 3-0 in the all-time series.
